Affordable Green Living in the Heartland

Just outside of Chicago, The Village in Burns Harbor is a new urbanist development focused on community, neighbors and sustainable living. All of the homes, capped at a $250,000 price, are Silver Level NAHB Green Standard certified and include the lot and the landscaping. The designs, floor plans and colors are reminiscent of "yesteryear" with bungalows, four-squares and farmhouse-style modern homes.

From the developers:

"The Village in Burns Harbor allows you to really live, not just exist. Providing the warmth and charm of a home town, the community features two large parks with plans for more, an exciting playground and a stocked fishing pond all designed to encourage family outings. Sidewalks connect neighbor to neighbor, and homes are welcoming, inviting friends to gather.

Escape the world of cookie-cutter homes and sprawling subdivisions. Come to The Village in Burns Harbor where the sense of community is real and strong."

Color Caffeine - Chartreuse Glow

Our last Color Caffeine installment before the holidays is a nod to another cheery and festive hue "Chartreuse Glow". This vivid green tone is a fresh and crisp take on the green family for a modernized decor theme. Touches of shimmer, sheen and glitter add elegance to Chartreuse Glow, while tonal prints, accents of white and dove gray and subtle distressing on finishes transitions this hue from holiday cheer into the beginning of springtime decor.

(If you missed the other holiday palette inspirations in this series - Copper Caramel, Golden Glaze or Icy Watercolors - you can revisit the collection on flickr.)

Color Caffeine - Copper Caramel

The holidays are already here and our color palette inspirations for the season's home decorating and entertaining continue today with "Copper Caramel". Warm and elegant, this hue is inviting and easy to blend into every day decor. Subtle sheen with an earthy quality makes Copper Caramel a metallic accent that can work with your design style all year long. In tandem with last week's color, Golden Glaze, these two tones create a glamorous statement in the metallic color and finish family. Our entire collection of Color Caffeine palettes can be found here.

More Craftsman Style in Portland

As promised, today we are sharing the interior photos from our tour of the home on Kelsi Terrace. Warm and cozy family spaces, gorgeous built in storage, natural stone and warm woods completed the authentic Craftsman style architecture of the home. Attention to period specific detail, such as the ceiling in the dining room and the rustic lighting were lovely touches that made this home a perfect space to welcome a new family.
